Space coloring pages give you the whole sky to work with. This set mixes real things, such as ringed planets, spiral galaxies, comets and the craters of the moon, with playful ones such as green aliens and UFOs. What you can color in these space coloring pages
- Planets: balls of rock or gas that orbit a star. Ours come as a set on the solar system page.
- Stars and constellations: far-off suns, plus the dot-to-dot patterns people have traced between them for thousands of years.
- Galaxies: huge spinning islands of stars. Ours, the Milky Way, is a spiral with hundreds of billions of them.
- Comets: lumps of ice and dust. Near the sun they grow a glowing tail that always points away from it.
- Asteroids and meteors: space rocks. One that burns up in our air makes the streak we call a shooting star.
- The moon: gray plains, bright highlands and thousands of craters.
- Aliens and UFOs: nobody has found any yet, which means you can't color them wrong.
How to color outer space
Space is dark, but a page colored solid black hides the outlines and uses up a whole crayon. Try these ideas.
- Build a deep sky. Layer dark blue, purple and a little black, and leave some patches lighter. It reads as night without going flat.
- Save the stars. Color around the stars so they stay white, or dot them on at the end with a white gel pen.
- Make a nebula. In photos, clouds of gas glow pink, violet and teal. Blend two or three of those in soft patches behind the planets.
- Light the planets from one side. Decide where the sun is. Color that side of every planet lighter and the far side darker, and they'll look round.
- Try black paper. Trace the outline onto black paper and use chalk, pastels or metallic pencils.
A fact to share while you color: space is silent. Sound needs air or something else to travel through, and space has almost none.
Frequently asked questions
Are these space coloring pages free?
Yes. All space coloring pages are free to download and print for personal and classroom use.
Do you have easy space coloring sheets for preschool?
Yes. Easy sheets have one big subject, such as a smiling moon, a planet with rings or a waving alien, and only a handful of stars. They fit a space week or a letter-of-the-week lesson.
Are there outer space coloring pages for adults?
Yes. The Detailed pages include a nebula full of swirls, a crowded scene with planets and comets, and an observatory under the stars. They take colored pencils or fine markers and a couple of hours.
What colors are things in space?
The moon is gray. Mars is rusty orange, Neptune is deep blue and Saturn is pale gold. Stars range from blue-white to yellow to red. The sun is actually white, though it looks yellow from the ground.
