A short history of Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day is February 14. It's named after Saint Valentine, an early Christian saint, though little is known for certain about his life. By the Middle Ages the day was linked with love and courtship, and people began sending handwritten notes. Printed cards took off in the 1800s. In US schools the custom is friendlier than romantic: each student brings a small card for everyone in the class and drops them into decorated boxes or bags.
Valentine's Day coloring pages for class parties
- Class card swap: print the four-to-a-page valentines, color them, cut them apart and write one for each classmate.
- Valentine mailbox: color a mailbox page and glue it to the front of a shoebox or paper bag to collect cards.
- Party station: set out pages, crayons and stickers as one of the activity tables.
- Kindness notes: write one kind thing about a friend inside a colored heart.
- Cards for family: fold a full page in half for a grandparent, a neighbor or the mail carrier.
Frequently asked questions
Are these Valentine's Day coloring pages free?
Yes. Every Valentine's Day coloring page here is free to print and download for personal and classroom use.
Can I print these as valentines for my child's class?
Yes. The color-your-own sheets have four cards per page, so seven sheets cover a class of 28. Use card stock if you can, since it's easier to cut and write on.
Do you have Valentine coloring pages for adults?
Yes. Pages marked Detailed include lace doily hearts, rose bouquets and a heart mandala with fine lines for pencils and gel pens.
What colors go with Valentine's Day besides red and pink?
Try purple, peach, cream and gold. A page done in pinks with one strong red heart in the middle looks more striking than red everywhere.
