What Halloween is about
Halloween falls on October 31 every year. Its roots go back about 2,000 years to Samhain, a Celtic festival that marked the end of the harvest and the start of winter. Today it's mostly about costumes, carved pumpkins and trick-or-treating, when kids go door to door collecting candy from neighbors.
Ways to use Halloween coloring pages
- Party table activity: set out a stack of pages and a cup of crayons so guests have something to do while everyone arrives.
- Window gallery: color, cut out and tape ghosts, bats and pumpkins to the front window for trick-or-treaters to see.
- Classroom countdown: hand out one page each day of the last week of October and staple them into a booklet on the 31st.
- Candy alternative: roll up a page with two crayons and a ribbon for trick-or-treaters who can't have sweets.
- Costume planning: let kids design a costume on a blank trick-or-treater page before you start making it.
