New Year traditions
New Year's Day is January 1, the first day of the calendar most of the world uses. People stay up on December 31 to count down the last ten seconds to midnight, then cheer, hug and make noise. Many set resolutions, which are promises to themselves about the year ahead. Families with young children often hold a noon countdown instead, with the same hats and confetti twelve hours early. Lunar New Year follows the moon, so it falls on a different date each year between January 21 and February 20. It's celebrated across East and Southeast Asia and in communities worldwide with family dinners, red decorations and lanterns.
Activities with New Year's coloring pages
- Noon countdown: color party hats and a clock in the morning, then count down to twelve noon with juice and noisemakers.
- Goal sheet: fill in a resolution page on January 1, seal it in an envelope and open it next December.
- First week back: teachers can use the goal pages to ease into the first school day after winter break.
- Year in review: draw a favorite memory from last year on the back of the page.
- Party placemats: put a fireworks page at every seat for a New Year's Eve dinner.
Frequently asked questions
Are these New Year's coloring pages free?
Yes. Every New Year's coloring page here is free to print and download for personal and classroom use.
What should kids write on a New Year's resolution page?
Keep it small and specific: learn to ride a bike, read ten books, try one new food each month, be kind to a sibling. Younger kids can draw the goal instead of writing it.
Do you have New Year's Eve coloring pages?
Yes. The midnight clock, fireworks, party hat and countdown pages all fit a December 31 party, whether your countdown is at midnight or at noon.
Are there Lunar New Year coloring pages here?
Yes, a small set: lanterns, red envelopes, a dragon dance and blossoms. We leave out the zodiac animal because it changes every year.
