Nature Coloring Pages
Nature coloring pages bring the outdoors to the table on days when you can't get out in it. This set has a stream running over rocks, a pond with reeds and dragonflies, a forest floor covered in ferns, a meadow under a big sky and close-ups of leaves, feathers, shells and pinecones. They're calm pages, with no buildings and no cars.

- Seashore: tide pools, shells, driftwood and crabs.
- Desert: cacti and a rock arch.
- Up close: a single leaf, a feather, a pinecone or a spider web hung with dew.
How to color a nature scene
Natural things are never one flat color, and that's the secret to these pages.
- Mix your greens. Grass in sun is yellow-green. Pine needles are blue-green. Moss is olive. Use at least three on one page.
- Break up the browns. Bark, soil, rocks and dead leaves are all brown, but different browns. Add gray to rocks and red to soil.
- Color water last. Water mostly reflects what's above and around it. A pond under trees is green-brown. A lake under a clear sky is blue. Leave thin white lines for ripples.
- Fade the distance. Far hills and trees look paler and bluer than near ones.
- Leave some white. Clouds, foam on a stream and highlights on wet stones can stay the color of the paper.
Coloring pairs well with a real walk. Take a page outside, or bring back a leaf, and match your pencils to it. You'll notice colors you'd never guess from memory, like the purple in a shadow or the pink in a tree trunk.
Many people find nature scenes especially restful to color. Our article on the benefits of coloring explains why.
