Rocket Ship Coloring Pages

Count down from ten and pick a rocket ship coloring page. There are classic cartoon rockets with a round window and three fins, tall launch rockets standing on the pad, flying saucers with a friendly alien at the controls and spaceships of our own invention cruising past ringed planets. Flames, stars and a moon or two fill the backgrounds.

Every kind of rocket ship coloring page

  • Cartoon rockets: a pointed nose, a porthole and three fins. It's the shape most people draw from memory.
  • Launch rockets: tall stacks with boosters strapped to the sides, standing next to a tower.
  • Spaceplanes: winged ships that ride a rocket up and glide back down to a runway.
  • Capsules and landers: small cone-shaped crew capsules and spidery landers with four legs.
  • Flying saucers: disc-shaped ships with a glass dome. Pure science fiction and fun to decorate.
  • Space stations: modules, solar panels and a docking port with a ship arriving.
  • Imaginary starships: long cruisers and small scout ships of our own design, engines glowing at the back.

How a rocket works

A rocket moves by throwing hot gas out of its engines very fast. The gas goes down and the rocket goes up. It doesn't need air to push against, which is why rockets keep working in the emptiness of space. They even carry their own oxygen to burn the fuel, because there is none up there.

Most of a launch rocket is fuel tank. To stay in orbit, a spacecraft has to reach about 17,500 miles per hour. That takes so much fuel that rockets are built in stages. When a stage runs empty it drops away, and the rest of the rocket has less weight to carry.

The main parts are easy to spot on a page:

  • Nose cone: the pointed tip that cuts through the air and protects the cargo.
  • Body: the long tube that holds the fuel tanks.
  • Fins: they keep the rocket flying straight.
  • Nozzles: the bell shapes at the bottom where the flame comes out.

For the flame, start with white or pale yellow next to the nozzle, then orange, then red at the tips.

Frequently asked questions

Are these rocket ship coloring pages free?

Yes. All rocket ship coloring pages are free to download and print for personal and classroom use.

What is the difference between a rocket and a spaceship?

A rocket is the engine and fuel that gets something off the ground. A spaceship, or spacecraft, is the vehicle that travels in space, often with people inside. Many rockets carry a spacecraft on top. In everyday speech, and on this page, rocket ship covers both.

Do you have a simple spaceship coloring page for preschoolers?

Yes. Pages marked Easy show one chunky rocket or saucer with a few stars around it. The shapes are big enough for crayons and for cutting out afterward.

What colors should I use for a rocket?

Real launch rockets are mostly white, with black, orange or silver sections. White paint reflects sunlight and helps keep the fuel cold. A cartoon rocket can be anything, and red and white checks are the classic look.
