Fun axolotl facts to share while you color

  • Axolotls are a type of salamander, an amphibian, even though they look a bit like fish.
  • The frilly "feathers" on their heads are gills, which they use to breathe underwater.
  • Unlike most amphibians, axolotls usually stay in their young, water-dwelling form for their whole lives.
  • They can regrow lost limbs and even parts of their organs.
  • Wild axolotls live only in a few lakes and canals near Mexico City, and they are critically endangered.

Axolotl color ideas

Real axolotls come in pink (called leucistic), wild-type brown and green, golden, white and dark black-gray. On paper you don't need to stop there: try rainbow gills, galaxy patterns or a pastel axolotl that matches your favorite colors.
