Star facts, and how to make a star shine on paper
The stars in the sky are not pointy. Each one is a giant ball of glowing gas like our sun, which is the closest star to Earth. They look like points with spikes because they are so far away, and because their light wobbles as it passes through our air. That wobble is the twinkle.
Stars come in different colors depending on how hot they are. The hottest burn blue-white. Medium stars like the sun are yellow-white. The coolest glow orange or red.
A shooting star is not a star at all. It's a bit of space rock or dust, often no bigger than a grain of sand, burning up as it hits the air high above us.
To make a star glow on the page:
- Color the center pale yellow or leave it white.
- Blend out to golden yellow, then orange at the tips of the points.
- Shade one side of each point slightly darker, and the star will look folded.
- Color the sky around it dark blue or purple. A bright star needs a dark background.
Frequently asked questions
Are these star coloring pages free?
Yes. All star coloring pages are free to download and print for personal and classroom use.
Do you have a big star coloring sheet to cut out?
Yes. The cut-out pages have one large star or six medium ones with bold outlines. Print them on card stock for garlands, door signs, award badges and tree toppers.
How do you draw a five-point star?
Draw it without lifting your pencil. Start at the lower left. Go up to the top point, down to the lower right, up to the left arm, straight across to the right arm and back to where you started. Our tracing page has dotted lines and arrows to follow.
What colors should I use for stars?
Yellow and gold are traditional. Real stars are blue-white, yellow, orange and red, so those suit a space scene. For a night-sky mobile, try silver, pale blue and white.
