Wolf facts and fur colors
A wolf pack is a family. The parents lead, and older brothers and sisters help feed and watch the pups. A howl can carry for miles across open country, and each wolf has its own voice. Wolves can trot for hours and cover many miles in a night while they look for food. Every pet dog, from a pug to a Great Dane, descends from wolves that lived thousands of years ago.
A gray wolf is never just gray. Look at a photo and you'll see cream on the legs and cheeks, tan behind the ears, and black tips along the back and tail. Color the lightest areas first, then stroke darker pencil over them in the direction the fur lies. Adult wolves have yellow, amber or light brown eyes, so skip the blue unless you're coloring a pup. For a night scene, shade the sky dark blue and leave the moon and the edges of the fur white.
Frequently asked questions
Are these wolf coloring pages free?
Yes. All wolf coloring pages are free to download and print for personal and classroom use.
Do wolves really howl at the moon?
No. They howl at any time, day or night, to call the pack together or mark their territory. They lift their noses because pointing upward helps the sound travel farther.
Do you have realistic wolf coloring pages?
Yes. The Detailed pages include a wolf portrait, a pack in a winter forest and a wolf on a cliff. Their fine fur lines suit colored pencils, and this colored pencil guide explains layering.
What is the difference between a wolf and a werewolf coloring page?
A wolf page shows the real animal. A werewolf is a storybook monster that is half person, half wolf. If that's what you want, see the werewolf coloring pages.
