Tree facts and tips for forest coloring pages
You can read a tree's age from its stump. In places with seasons, a tree adds one ring every year, with wide rings in good years and narrow rings in dry ones. The tallest trees on Earth are coast redwoods in California, and the tallest of them top 370 feet. Forests cover close to a third of the world's land. Squirrels bury far more nuts than they dig up again, and some of the forgotten ones grow into new trees. A big oak can drop thousands of acorns in a good year.
The trick to a forest is depth. Color the nearest trees darkest and richest, then make each row behind them lighter and a little bluer, so the forest seems to fade into the distance. Bark is more gray than brown on many trees, and birch bark is white with black marks. Leave small gaps of bare paper between the leaves to look like sunlight coming through. For a fall forest, swap the greens for yellow, orange, red and rust, and scatter the same colors on the ground.
Frequently asked questions
Are these forest coloring pages free?
Yes. All forest coloring pages are free to download and print for personal and classroom use.
What colors do I need for a forest coloring page?
At least three greens, two browns, a gray and a yellow. Add orange and red for fall, or pale blue and violet for snow shadows in a winter scene. A 24-pack of pencils or crayons covers all of it.
Do you have forest pictures to color for adults?
Yes. The Detailed pages include a forest floor thick with ferns, a misty redwood grove and a tree with every leaf patterned. They take an evening or two with colored pencils or fine-tip markers.
Is there an easy forest coloring page for young kids?
Yes. Try the three simple trees with a rabbit, or the big oak with a squirrel. The trunks and treetops are large shapes that are quick to fill. Add a yellow sun and a few birds to finish the scene.
