Facts to go with your bear coloring pages
There are eight kinds of bear in the world. A bear's sense of smell is among the best of any land animal, and it can pick up food from a long way off. Cubs are born tiny in the winter den and stay with their mother for a year or more. Black bears are strong climbers, and a scared cub will often scramble straight up a tree. A grizzly's long front claws are for digging. A polar bear's huge paws work like snowshoes on ice and like paddles in the water.
For a brown bear, layer two or three browns and keep the muzzle lighter than the rest of the face. A polar bear needs almost no color: leave the paper white and shade the belly and legs with pale blue or light gray. Color the nose and lips black. Black bears often have a tan muzzle, so don't fill the whole face in black. Short, choppy strokes make fur look thick, and they hide the white gaps that markers leave.
