Facts for a USA social studies lesson

The flag. It has 13 stripes, seven red and six white, for the original 13 colonies. The blue field holds 50 white stars, one for each state. The current design dates from 1960, after Hawaii became the 50th state. When you color it, the top and bottom stripes are both red.

National symbols. The bald eagle has appeared on the Great Seal since 1782. The American bison is the national mammal, the rose is the national flower and the oak is the national tree.

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France and was dedicated in 1886. She holds a torch in her right hand and a tablet in her left, and her crown has seven rays. The statue is copper that has weathered to green, so green is the accurate color.

The Liberty Bell hangs in Philadelphia and is famous for its crack.

The capital is Washington, D.C., a federal district that isn't part of any state.

The states. There are 50. Alaska is the largest by area and Rhode Island is the smallest. Each state has its own flag, bird and flower. The northern cardinal is the state bird of seven states, more than any other bird.

Classroom ideas. Assign each student a state and have them color its flag or bird, then find the state on a USA map coloring page. Around Memorial Day, Flag Day on June 14, Independence Day on July 4 and Veterans Day on November 11, the flag and eagle pages make simple table decorations.

For the flag you need a plain red and a dark navy blue. Leave the white stripes and the stars uncolored.
