• Pitching and hitting: a windup on the mound and a full swing at the plate
• Fielding: a shortstop scooping a grounder, an outfielder diving and a first baseman stretching for the throw
• Catcher and umpire: a catcher in mask and chest protector, and an umpire calling a strike
• Gear: a glove, a wooden bat, a ball with its stitches, a batting helmet and a cap to design
• The ballpark: the diamond from above, a dugout and a scoreboard
• T-ball and softball: a small batter at the tee and a softball pitcher's underhand windup

A few facts turn these pictures into a lesson.

Nine players take the field on defense: pitcher, catcher, first base, second base, shortstop, third base, and left, center and right field.

Innings. A regulation game has nine innings. In each inning both teams bat once, and a team keeps batting until it makes three outs. Youth games are usually shorter, often six innings.

Strikes and balls. Three strikes and the batter is out. Four balls and the batter walks to first base.

The diamond. There are four bases: first, second, third and home plate. On a full-size field they sit 90 feet apart. A runner who touches all four scores a run.

A home run is a fair ball hit over the outfield fence, which lets the batter circle every base.

A regulation baseball has 108 double stitches, sewn in red thread. That detail turns the ball page into a counting challenge for patient kids.

Coaches can print the diamond page and have players write each position's name where it belongs. At a team party, the blank cap and jersey pages let every player design a uniform.
