Where Santa Claus comes from
The Santa story goes back to Saint Nicholas, a bishop who lived in the fourth century in what is now Turkey and was known for giving secret gifts. Dutch families called him Sinterklaas, and that name turned into Santa Claus in America. The picture most people know today, a round, jolly man with a white beard who rides a sleigh pulled by reindeer and comes down the chimney, took shape in American poems and drawings during the 1800s. His suit hasn't always been red. Older pictures show him in green, blue and brown too, so your Santa can wear any color.
