What happens in December

December holds the winter solstice, around December 21 or 22, the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Hanukkah, the eight-night Jewish festival of lights, usually falls this month, though its dates shift each year. Christmas is December 25. Kwanzaa runs from December 26 to January 1, and New Year's Eve is the 31st. Most schools close for a winter break of about two weeks. It's a season of lights, concerts, baking and giving, and in the northern states, of snow.

  • Solstice sun: on the shortest day, color the sun page and note what time it gets dark.
