Music Coloring Pages

These music coloring pages are part art, part theory lesson. Start with single music notes and a treble clef, move on to guitars, pianos, drums and violins, and finish with a full orchestra or a marching band. Music teachers use them for note-value practice, instrument families and quiet listening time.

Music theory you can teach with a crayon

Note values. In 4/4 time a whole note lasts four beats, a half note two beats, a quarter note one beat and an eighth note half a beat. Give each value a color, such as blue for whole notes and red for quarter notes, and have students color a page of mixed notes by the key.

The staff. A staff has five lines and four spaces. On the treble clef, the notes on the lines from bottom to top are E, G, B, D, F, often remembered as "Every Good Boy Does Fine." The notes in the spaces spell FACE.

Instrument families. An orchestra has four: strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. Assign each family a color and let students sort the instrument pages. The piano is usually grouped with percussion because hammers strike its strings.

Keyboard geography. A full-size piano has 88 keys: 52 white and 36 black. The black keys come in groups of two and three. Coloring every group of two helps beginners find C, the white key just to the left of each pair.

Print a few instrument pages for listening time. While a piece plays, students color the instrument they hear.
