What happens in March

March is when winter hands over to spring. The spring equinox falls around March 20, and from then on days are longer than nights. Most of the United States moves clocks forward one hour on the second Sunday of March for daylight saving time. St. Patrick's Day is March 17. It began as a religious feast day for the patron saint of Ireland and is now a celebration of Irish heritage with parades and plenty of green. Math fans mark Pi Day on March 14, since the date reads 3.14. March is also Women's History Month. The weather swings between snow, wind, rain and the first warm afternoons.

Use March coloring pages as a calendar and bulletin board activity

  • Lion or lamb chart: each day, color a small lion for wild weather or a lamb for calm, then count which won.
  • Top of the calendar: the colored title page marks the new month on the wall.
  • Shamrock garland: cut out shamrocks, write something you feel lucky to have on each and string them up.
  • Kite display: students color kites, add yarn tails and fly them across a blue-paper board.
  • Signs of spring list: color a flower in the grid on each day someone spots a new bloom or bird.
