Simple weather facts
Rain is part of the water cycle. The sun warms water in oceans, lakes and puddles, and it rises into the air as invisible vapor. High up, the vapor cools into tiny droplets that form clouds. When the droplets join and get heavy, they fall as rain, or as snow if the air is cold enough. A rainbow appears when sunlight shines through raindrops, which bend the light and split it into red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Lightning is a giant electric spark, and thunder is the sound of air heated by it. You see the flash first because light travels faster than sound.
Using weather coloring pages
- Daily weather chart: color a small sun, cloud, rain or snow symbol each morning and count them at the end of the month.
- Cloud spotting: color the three cloud types, then go outside and see which one matches the sky.
- Rainbow order: use the first letters of the colors to remember the bands from the outside in, starting with red.
- Rainy day box: keep a folder of pages, a clipboard and markers ready for wet afternoons and indoor recess.
- Dress for it: after coloring a page, ask what you'd wear in that weather, from sun hat to rain boots.
