What happens in February
February is the shortest month, with 28 days in most years and 29 in a leap year. Groundhog Day is February 2. According to the folk tradition, if the groundhog sees its shadow there will be six more weeks of winter. Valentine's Day is February 14, and Presidents' Day is the third Monday. February is also Black History Month in the United States, when schools study the achievements and history of Black Americans. Many schools hit their 100th day around now. In most of the country it's still cold enough for snow, though the first snowdrops may be poking through.
Use February coloring pages on a classroom calendar

- Shadow science: after coloring the groundhog, trace your own shadow outside in the morning and again at noon.
- Research frame: students draw and label a person they studied for Black History Month inside the blank frame.
- Leap year math: count the boxes in the grid and talk about why some years get a 29th day.
