Antler facts and tips for deer coloring pages
Antlers aren't horns. They are solid bone, and a deer grows a brand-new set every year. While they grow, they are covered in soft, fuzzy skin called velvet. In the fall the velvet peels off, and in winter the antlers drop to the ground, where mice and squirrels gnaw them for the minerals. A fawn can stand within about half an hour of being born, and it spends its first weeks lying still and hidden while its mother feeds nearby.
A white-tailed deer changes with the seasons: reddish tan in summer and gray-brown in winter. Either way, keep the belly, the throat patch, the rings around the eyes and nose, and the underside of the tail white. The nose is black and shiny. Color antlers a bone tan, darker at the base and paler at the tips. For a fawn, simply color around the spots and leave them as bare paper. Colored pencils give you the short, soft fur that deer have.
