Castle Coloring Pages
Lower the drawbridge: these castle coloring pages have towers to spare. Some are real-world fortresses with thick walls, arrow slits and a moat. Others are fairy tale castles with pointed roofs, flags and a winding road up to the gate. Knights, dragons, kings and queens turn up on a few pages, and the rest leave the castle to you.

The parts of a castle and what they were for
Real castles were built for defense, and nearly every feature had a job.
- Moat: a deep ditch, often filled with water, that kept attackers and their ladders away from the walls.
- Drawbridge: a bridge over the moat that could be pulled up.
- Portcullis: a heavy grille of wood and iron that dropped down to block the gate.
- Battlements: the tooth-shaped tops of the walls. Defenders stood behind the raised parts and looked out through the gaps.
- Arrow slits: narrow openings that let an archer shoot out while staying hard to hit.
- Keep: the strongest tower, where the lord's family lived. It was the last place to fall.
Many of the earliest castles in Europe were wooden towers on a mound of earth. Stone came later, partly because it didn't burn.
For stone walls, don't use one flat gray. Lightly color the whole wall, then go over random blocks again with brown-gray or blue-gray. Add green moss near the water and dark shadows inside the windows. Flags and roofs are the place for bright color.
Frequently asked questions
Are these castle coloring pages free?
Yes. All castle coloring pages are free to download and print for personal and classroom use.
Do you have an easy castle coloring sheet?
Yes. The Easy pages show a small castle with two or three towers, a big arched door and a flag. The sandcastle is the simplest of all.
Are these princess castles or knight castles?
Both, and you don't have to choose. The fairy tale castles have tall towers and room for hearts on the flags. The fortresses have drawbridges and battlements. Add a knight, a queen, a dragon or all three to either one.
What colors should a castle be?
Real castles are the color of the local stone: gray, tan, honey yellow or reddish brown. Roofs were slate gray, clay red or green weathered copper. A fairy tale castle can be pink, lavender or sky blue with gold trim.
