Dragon lore and tips for coloring scales
Dragon stories turn up all over the world. In European tales dragons often guard gold and battle knights. In Chinese tradition the dragon is a lucky, powerful creature that brings rain, and long dragon puppets dance through the streets at Lunar New Year. The red dragon on the flag of Wales has been a national symbol for centuries. There are real dragons too: the Komodo dragon of Indonesia is the largest lizard alive, and the bearded dragon is a popular pet.
Scales are easier than they look. Pick three shades of one color, say light, medium and dark green. Color every scale with the light shade, add the medium shade to the lower half of each one, and touch the dark shade just along the bottom edge. Make the belly plates a contrasting color such as cream or gold. For fire, start with yellow at the mouth, blend to orange and finish with red at the tips. Metallic pencils and gel pens are great on horns, claws and treasure.
