What happens in August
August is usually hot and often humid, with the last weeks of summer vacation in some places and the first weeks of school in others. Many districts in the South and West start classes in early or mid August. There are no federal holidays this month. The Perseid meteor shower peaks around August 12, and on a dark, clear night you may see dozens of shooting stars an hour. State and county fairs are in full swing, gardens are overflowing and the days are getting shorter. August was named after the Roman emperor Augustus.
Use August coloring pages as a back-to-school calendar
- Countdown to the first day: color the title page, mark the start date on the grid and color a pencil in each box until then.
- Summer memory page: draw the best day of the summer on the back of a finished sheet to share in the first week.
- Meteor watch: color the night sky page in the afternoon, then stay up to see the real thing.
- Fair ribbons: color and cut out prize ribbons and award them for backyard games.
- Bedtime reset: color a page each evening during the last week of vacation as part of an earlier wind-down routine.
