What happens in July
July is the hottest month of the year across most of the United States. Independence Day on July 4 is the big holiday, marked with fireworks, parades and cookouts. Schools are on summer break, so it's peak season for vacations, camps and trips to pools, lakes and beaches. Days are long but already getting a little shorter after the June solstice. Thunderstorms are common on hot afternoons. In gardens, tomatoes, corn, berries and sunflowers are coming into their own, and the full moon of July is sometimes called the Buck Moon, since male deer are growing new antlers.
Use July coloring pages as a vacation calendar
- Trip countdown: color the title page and cross off grid boxes until departure day.
- Summer bucket list: write one thing to do in each box, such as catch fireflies or make ice pops, and color the box when it's done.
- Travel kit: clip a dozen pages to a clipboard for the car, plane or waiting room.
- Heat-wave afternoon: close the curtains, turn on a fan and color until it cools off outside.
- Postcards: cut a finished page to postcard size, write on the back and mail it to a friend from your trip.
