September Coloring Pages

September smells like sharpened pencils and apples. Our free September coloring pages follow the month from the first weeks of school to the first red leaves: apple orchards, school buses, acorns, squirrels, football on a Friday night and geese heading south. The September title page and blank calendar grid give teachers an easy first bulletin board of the year.

September designs you can print

  • September title page: the month name in block letters with apples and leaves
  • Apple season: orchards, bushel baskets, cider jugs and a worm in an apple
  • Back in class: a school bus seen from the side
  • First signs of fall: a leaf starting to turn, acorns, squirrels and migrating geese
  • Labor Day: a last cookout and community helpers in their work clothes
  • Grandparents Day: an interview page with questions to ask and a frame for a portrait
  • Fall sports and fairs: footballs, marching bands and a harvest festival

What happens in September

September is the bridge from summer to fall. Labor Day, the first Monday, honors American workers and is the last long weekend of summer for many families. Schools that haven't started yet open right after it. The fall equinox arrives around September 22 or 23, and after that nights are longer than days. National Grandparents Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day, and Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15. Apples are ready to pick, the first leaves change in northern states, and geese and monarch butterflies begin their trips south.

Use September coloring pages on the classroom calendar

  • First bulletin board: color the title page, then surround it with one apple per student, each labeled with a name.
  • Apple calendar: color an apple in the grid for each day of school and count up to the 10th and 20th day.
  • Leaf watch: color a leaf green, then yellow, then red on three dates as the trees outside change.
  • Grandparent interview: fill in the interview page by phone or in person and color the frame.
  • Equinox check: mark the first day of fall on the grid and compare sunrise and sunset times.
