Beach facts to talk about

Sand is made of tiny pieces of rock and shell, ground down by waves over thousands of years. That's why beaches come in different colors: white, tan, pink and even black where the sand comes from volcanic rock. The sea rises and falls twice a day in most places. These tides are caused mainly by the pull of the moon. At low tide the water leaves pools among the rocks where crabs, snails and anemones wait for it to come back. Seashells are the old homes of sea snails, clams and other soft-bodied animals. Hermit crabs don't grow shells of their own, so they move into empty ones.

Using beach coloring pages

  • Vacation travel kit: pack pages, a clipboard and pencils for the plane, the car or a rainy day at the rental.
  • Shell match: color the shell page, then see how many of those shapes you can find on the sand.
  • Sand art: brush glue on the beach part of a finished page and sprinkle on real sand.
  • Trip memory book: color one page for each day and write a sentence about it on the back.
  • Your own beach: turn vacation photos into line art with Photo to Coloring Page and color the day you remember.
