Word Coloring Pages

Word coloring pages turn a single word or short phrase into the picture. Each one is drawn in thick outline letters, sometimes filled with stripes or flowers, sometimes surrounded by doodles. You'll find kind words, sight words for early readers, affirmations and greetings for cards and classroom walls. If you like coloring words more than scenes, start here.

Ways to use word coloring pages

Sight word practice. Early readers learn a few dozen high-frequency words by sight, since many of them, like "the" and "said," don't sound out neatly. Coloring a word keeps a child looking at its shape and letter order for several minutes, far longer than a flash card does. Have them say the word, trace it, color it and then use it in a sentence.

Word walls. Print the words your class is learning, let students color them and pin them up alphabetically. Kids refer to a wall they made themselves.

Classroom values. Choose five words for the year, such as kind, brave, curious, fair and patient. Each table colors one for a display.

Cards and gifts. "Thank you" and "Get well soon" pages fold into cards. Print at half size on cardstock.

Journals and planners. Teens and adults cut out colored words and tape them into notebooks as headers.

Coloring tips for letters. Outline each letter in a darker shade of the color you'll fill it with, and the word stands out. An ombre effect works well: start with one color at the top of the letters and fade to another at the bottom. For pattern-filled letters, give each letter its own pair of colors.
