What happens in October
October is the middle of fall. In much of the northern United States the leaves reach their brightest color this month, and the first frost arrives. Halloween is October 31. The second Monday is a federal holiday, observed as Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples' Day depending on where you live. Fire Prevention Week takes place in early October, so many schools get a visit from the local fire department. Farms open pumpkin patches and corn mazes, apples and cranberries are harvested, and the full moon nearest the fall equinox, the Harvest Moon, sometimes lands in early October.
Use October coloring pages as a countdown calendar
- Halloween countdown: color a pumpkin in the grid each day until the 31st.
- Calendar wall: the colored title page goes at the top, with a few bats and leaves cut out around it.
- Leaf graph: collect leaves on a walk, sort by color and color a bar chart to match.
- Escape plan: on the fire safety page, draw your home and mark two ways out of each room.
- Costume poll: each student colors a costume idea, and the class tallies the most popular.
Frequently asked questions
Are these October coloring pages free?
Yes. Every October coloring page here is free to print and download for personal and classroom use.
What do you color for October?
Pumpkins, fall leaves, scarecrows, owls, black cats, candy and costumes. Warm oranges, reds, browns and purples cover almost every page.
Do you have October color pages that aren't Halloween?
Yes. The leaf, harvest, hayride, fire safety and night animal pages have no Halloween theme, so they suit classrooms that don't celebrate it.
Is there an October calendar I can color?
Yes. The grid is blank so you can write in this year's dates, and many families draw a small pumpkin in each box as a countdown to the 31st.
