What happens in June
June brings the summer solstice, around June 20 or 21, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Flag Day is June 14. Juneteenth, on June 19, is a federal holiday that marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free. Father's Day is the third Sunday. Most US schools that haven't already finished let out this month, and public libraries kick off summer reading programs. It's also graduation season. The rose is June's flower, strawberries are at their peak in much of the country and fireflies start to appear on warm evenings.
Use June coloring pages for a summer calendar
- Summer plan calendar: color the title page, then write one small outing or activity in each box of the grid.
- Reading tracker: color a star in the grid for every day you read.
- Autograph page: on the last day of school, classmates sign each other's colored pages.
- Firefly jar: color the jar, then dab glow-in-the-dark paint on each firefly.
- Daylight chart: note the sunset time once a week and watch it creep later until the solstice.
