Real T. rex facts and color ideas

Tyrannosaurus rex means tyrant lizard king. It lived in what is now western North America about 68 to 66 million years ago, right at the end of the age of dinosaurs. An adult was around 40 feet long and stood about 12 feet tall at the hips. Its arms were only about three feet long, with two clawed fingers each. Its bite was among the strongest of any land animal that has ever lived. The skeleton that gave T. rex its name was dug up in Montana in 1902.

Nobody knows what color a T. rex was, because its fossils don't keep skin color. Skin impressions show small, pebbly scales. That leaves the choice to you. For a realistic look, borrow from big living reptiles and birds: olive green, brown, gray and dusty orange, with a paler belly and darker stripes or blotches along the back. Teeth are off-white, and the inside of the mouth is pink. Markers fill the large body fast, and a darker pencil on top adds the scaly texture.
