Trunk facts and tips for elephant coloring pages
An elephant's trunk is its nose and upper lip in one. It has no bones and tens of thousands of small muscles, which makes it strong enough to lift a log and gentle enough to pick up a peanut. Tusks are teeth that keep growing all through life. Elephants flap their ears to cool down, because the ears are full of blood vessels. A mother carries her calf for about 22 months before it is born, longer than any other land mammal.
Elephants are gray, but rarely plain gray. African elephants often look reddish or brown because of the soil they dust themselves with, and Asian elephants can have pink freckles on the ears and trunk. Start with a light gray layer, then draw the wrinkles with a darker gray pencil and smudge them a little. Tusks are ivory, which is a warm cream, not bright white. Crayons used on their side cover the large body fast and leave a rough texture that suits elephant skin.
Frequently asked questions
Are these elephant coloring pages free?
Yes. All elephant coloring pages are free to download and print for personal and classroom use.
How do I tell an African elephant from an Asian elephant?
Look at the ears and back. African elephants have very large ears and a back that dips in the middle. Asian elephants have smaller ears and a rounded back, and only some males have long tusks.
Do you have a simple elephant color sheet for toddlers?
Yes. The baby elephant sitting down, the elephant with a balloon and the elephant spraying water are Easy pages with thick outlines and no background.
Are there detailed elephant coloring pages for adults?
Yes. Look for the elephant with mandala-style patterns, the flower-covered elephant and the realistic African bull. Fine-tip markers and gel pens are a good match.
