- Puppy litters: several pups together, which is good practice for coloring different coats on one page
- Breed puppies: Labrador, golden retriever, corgi, husky, beagle and dachshund pups with their real markings
- Puppy firsts: a first bath, a first collar and a first trip to the vet
- Puppies with friends: a pup nose to nose with a kitten, a duckling or a butterfly
- Dressed-up puppies: a raincoat, a party hat or a bandana for a quick pop of color
Puppy facts to share while you color
Puppies are born with their eyes and ears closed. Their eyes open at around 10 to 14 days, and at first they look cloudy blue. A puppy starts out with 28 baby teeth. Those fall out and are replaced by 42 adult teeth by about six months, which is why puppies chew on everything. A group of puppies born together is called a litter. Newborn pups can't keep themselves warm, so they pile up next to their mother.
Puppy fur is soft, so press lightly and build the color in layers instead of pushing hard. Bellies and paw pads are often pink on young pups. A golden puppy looks best in pale yellow with a little light brown on the ears. For a black puppy, use dark gray for most of the coat and save true black for the shadows. That way the outline of the legs and face doesn't disappear. A pink tongue and a shiny black nose finish the face.
