Water rolls off a duck's back because of oil. A duck collects it from a gland near its tail and spreads it over its feathers with its bill. Webbed feet work like paddles. The blood vessels in a duck's legs are arranged so that very little body heat escapes through its feet, which is how it can stand on ice. A male is called a drake and a female is a hen. The loud, classic quack usually comes from the hen.

Ducklings aren't all yellow. Mallard ducklings are yellow with brown patches on the head and back, while white farm ducks start out solid yellow. For a mallard drake, color the head dark green, then go over it lightly with blue to get the shine. His chest is chestnut brown, his sides are pale gray, and both he and the hen have a blue patch on each wing. Use the side of a light blue crayon for the pond, and leave white rings around the duck for ripples.
