What boba is, and how to color it
Boba tea, also called bubble tea or pearl milk tea, was invented in Taiwan in the 1980s and spread around the world from there. The pearls are made from tapioca, a starch that comes from the root of the cassava plant. They're boiled until soft and chewy, then soaked in brown sugar syrup, which is why they're so dark. The extra-wide straw is there so the pearls fit through.
Flavor decides the color:
- Classic milk tea: light tan, like coffee with a lot of milk.
- Taro: soft lavender purple.
- Matcha: pale green.
- Thai tea: bright orange.
- Strawberry milk: pastel pink.
- Mango or passion fruit tea: golden yellow.
A cup is see-through, so treat it like glass. Color the drink, but leave a white strip down one side of the cup as a reflection. Make the drink a little darker at the bottom, where the syrup settles. Give the straw a bright stripe that contrasts with the drink.
Frequently asked questions
Are these boba coloring pages free?
Yes. All boba coloring pages are free to download and print for personal and classroom use.
Do you have cute boba coloring pages?
Yes. Many of the cups have a small face, rosy cheeks and cat, bear or bunny ears on the lid. They're drawn in the kawaii style and marked Easy or Medium.
What colors should I use for boba pearls?
Dark brown is the most realistic, with one white dot of shine on each pearl so it looks round. Popping pearls and jellies are a different story. They come in clear red, orange, yellow and green, so mix them up.
Are boba coloring pages good for teens and adults?
Yes. Boba pages are popular with older kids and teens, and filling in rows of pearls is calming at any age. The Detailed tea shop and pattern pages take the longest.
